The Power family ranch
The Power Ranch Community Association publishes the land's history. James Oliver Power arrived in Arizona in 1892 and settled in Lehi, near present-day Gilbert. He married Sarah Loveda Bullock in 1900. They raised 13 children in a five-room adobe house on the ranch.
The ranch covered 2,000 acres. Cotton was the main crop, and James was known for Pima cotton. The ranch also grew peaches, plums, grapes, nectarines, barley, wheat, sorghum and potatoes. After World War II it raised cattle until 1962, with herds that peaked at 600 head.
The Arizona Department of Transportation notes that Power Road is named for James and Sarah Power, who raised cattle and crops in Higley, and that a road called Power Road ran through their main ranch in the 1920s.
