Inside the Wall, Litchfield Park.
A 1916 Goodyear cotton town
built around The Wigwam.
Litchfield Park's original village grew from the Goodyear Farms company town that Goodyear Tire and Rubber founded in 1916 to grow long-staple cotton for tires. Its center sits at Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard, beside The Wigwam, which opened to the public as a resort in 1929.

The original village around Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard
Locally, the original part of Litchfield Park is called “inside the wall,” after the perimeter wall around it. Local listings also call it the Park and Original Litchfield Park.
The City of Litchfield Park places its city center at the intersection of Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard. The original village core there once held shops, a hospital, a school and a community building, according to the City's 2010 General Plan appendices.
The village design grew out of the Goodyear Farms company town and a village master plan drawn up in the mid-1960s. The City's 2022 General Plan describes the community's identity as rooted in that core village planning and calls for preserving its mid-century modern architecture.
Litchfield Park is a 3.3-square-mile city, incorporated in 1987. The old Village Center is now called Litchfield Square, a 26-acre mixed-use area the City describes as its new downtown.
From Goodyear cotton fields to a charter city
In 1916 Goodyear Tire and Rubber sent executive Paul W. Litchfield to buy land to grow Egyptian long-staple cotton, used to reinforce tires during World War I. Litchfield Ranch became headquarters of the Southwest Cotton Company, later Goodyear Farms. The U.S. Postal Service approved the Litchfield Park name in 1926.
Goodyear built Organization House as guest quarters for executives visiting from Akron, Ohio. It opened to the public as a resort in November 1929 and is now The Wigwam. In the 1920s Paul and Florence Litchfield built Rancho La Loma, a winter estate on the hill above the town site, which was gifted to the City in 2009.
In 1964 Goodyear formed a development company to expand the community into a planned city. Litchfield Park incorporated in 1987 and became a charter city in 2024.

City design review and the village plan
The historic core sits inside the City of Litchfield Park, which runs an active Design Review Board. The City's 2022 General Plan notes that the Board has reviewed much of the mid-century housing stock, and it calls for adopted design review guidelines and for evaluating a historic designation for qualified structures.
Before incorporation, the Goodyear master homeowners' association provided and maintained the community parks. Today the parks are City parks. Whether a given home in or near the core also belongs to a private association depends on its subdivision and is checked against recorded documents.
Litchfield Elementary School District operates Litchfield Elementary School at 255 East Wigwam Boulevard, Litchfield Park, AZ 85340.
